Charlie specialises in intellectual property law and advises on legal issues relating to the creation, exploitation and enforcement of UK and Community intellectual property rights, with a particular focus on dispute resolution and advice in the copyright field. Charlie’s practice includes advising on matters relating to patents, trade marks, copyright, designs, domain names and confidentiality and trade secrets. He advises clients across many industry sectors from biotech to manufacturing and retail, and on matters involving a range of technologies including electronics, computer software and mechanical engineering.
He has particular experience of patent and trade mark litigation in the Patents County Court, Patents Court of the High Court and Court of Appeal and has experience of working on multi-jurisdictional disputes with lawyers throughout Europe and in the US. Charlie also advises on brand portfolio management and strategy to limit the risk of infringement of third party rights.
In addition, Charlie advises on trade mark opposition appeals from the UKIPO to the High Court and from OHIM to the European Court of Justice (CFI), letters of request from foreign courts, domain name disputes involving country code and generic top level domain names and IP rights infringement on websites. He also advises on filing IP rights notifications with UK and European customs authorities and liaising with those authorities to combat the circulation of counterfeit products.
On the commercial side, Charlie works on licensing, co-ownership, manufacturing and development as well as transactional agreements. Recent matters have included giving advice on the scope of a worldwide patent licence for scanning technology and on the interpretation of a co-development agreement in the biotech field.
Charlie joined the firm in November 2003. He speaks fluent French and his interests are skiing, sailing and spending time with his family.
